RESUMO

Advanced glycation end products (AGE) in complex with their receptors (RAGE) cause a chronic inflammatory state in the body, which is the major mechanism in cancer development. This study aimed to conduct a systematic review and meta-analysis on the observational studies investigating the association between AGEs / sRAGE and cancer incidence. The PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science databases were comprehensively searched to identify papers focused on the associations of sRAGE and AGEs with cancer incidence up to May 2023. Eight studies with a total of 7690 participants were included in the analysis to evaluate the association between circulating sRAGE and cancer incidence. The results indicated that circulating sRAGE (per 100 ng/L) had a significant inverse association with cancer incidence (RR 0.977; 95% CI 0.956, 0.999; p = 0.036; I 2 = 73.3%). The association between AGEs and cancer incidence was evaluated in 8 studies with a total of 3718 individuals. Serum concentrations of AGEs (per 100 µg/L) were not associated with the risk of cancer incidence (RR 0.988; 95% CI 0.974, 1.002; p = 0.08; I2 = 78.8%). Our findings revealed that a higher circulating sRAGE may have a protective effect against cancer incidence.

We aimed to prospectively assess the association between variety and quantity of fruits and vegetables (FV) and cardiovascular diseases (CVD) incidence and mortality due to the limited evidence. Our analysis included 2,918 adults with a follow-up period of 29,559 person-years. An inverse association was detected between fruit intake and the risk of incidence and mortality from CVD. We found no association between diversity scores of fruits, vegetables, and FV with CVD risk. Subjects with high quantity-high variety, high quantity-low variety, and low quantity-high variety of fruits, vegetables, or FV exhibited no difference in CVD risk compared to the subjects with low quantity-low variety intake. Increasing the variety of FV was associated with increases in the intake of ß-carotene, lycopene, lutein, vitamin C, selenium, fibre, fat, and protein after adjustment for the quantity and covariates. We detected an inverse association between fruit intake and the incidence and mortality rates of CVD.

Background: Ulcerative colitis (UC) is a relapsing gastrointestinal disease. Identifying patients at a high risk of UC relapse and initiating preventive treatment can reduce the risk of UC recurrence and its dangerous side effects. The present study was performed to design and pilot test an online calculation tool for relapse risk prediction in UC. Methods: This study is based on our previous prospective study on 157 patients with UC in-remission UC. We designed an online website rooted in our pre-developed equation to calculate relapse risk scores. Then, 280 patients with UC who were not in relapse were randomly selected from our database, and the required information was filled in on the website accordingly. Finally, the indicators were manually calculated using the formula and compared with online-calculated data. Results: The developed bilingual website is available at http://www.ucrelapserisk.com. Of the 280 patients with UC, 151 (53.9%) were male. 88 patients were at high risk of relapse in the following year. There were no differences between the manually and online calculated Seo index, UC risk score, and probability of relapse in one year. Conclusion: This online tool is now available for patients and clinicians and provides an accurate relapse risk prediction for UC patients.

Background: Male testicular dysfunction is a considerable complication of anti-cancer therapies, including chemotherapy and radiotherapy, partly due to the increased oxidative stress caused by these treatments. Melatonin is an effective antioxidant agent that protects testicles against physical and toxic chemical stressors in animal models. This study aims to systematically review the melatonin's protective effects against anti-cancer stressors on rodential testicular tissue. Materials and Method: An extensive search was conducted in Web of Science, Scopus, and PubMed for animal studies investigating exogenous melatonin's protective effects on rodent testicles exposed to anti-cancer chemicals and radiotherapeutic agents. Using the DerSimonian and Laird random-effect model, standardized mean differences and 95% confidence intervals were estimated from the pooled data. The protocol was prospectively registered in the International Prospective Register of Systematic Reviews (PROSPERO: CRD42022355293). Results: The meta-analysis included 38 studies from 43 studies that were eligible for the review. Rats and mice were exposed to radiotherapy (ionizing radiations such as gamma- and roentgen radiation and radioactive iodine) or chemotherapy (methotrexate, paclitaxel, busulfan, cisplatin, doxorubicin, vinblastine, bleomycin, cyclophosphamide, etoposide, Taxol, procarbazine, docetaxel, and chlorambucil). According to our meta-analysis, all outcomes were significantly improved by melatonin therapy, including sperm quantity and quality (count, motility, viability, normal morphology, number of spermatogonia, Johnsen's testicular biopsy score, seminiferous tubular diameter, and seminiferous epithelial height), serum level of reproductive hormones (Follicle-Stimulating Hormone and testosterone), tissue markers of oxidative stress (testicular tissue malondialdehyde, superoxide dismutase, glutathione peroxidase, catalase, glutathione, caspase-3, and total antioxidant capacity), and weight-related characteristics (absolute body, epididymis, testis, and relative testis to body weights). Most SYRCLE domains exhibited a high risk of bias in the included studies. Also, significant heterogeneity and small-study effects were detected. Conclusion: In male rodents, melatonin therapy was related to improved testicular histopathology, reproductive hormones, testis and body weights, and reduced levels of oxidative markers in testicular tissues of male rodents. Future meticulous studies are recommended to provide a robust scientific backbone for human applications. Background: Health-related quality of life (HRQOL) assessment in patients with celiac disease (CD) leads to understanding the impact of the CD and interventions on the individual and society. The aim of this study was transcultural adaptation and evaluation of the reliability and validity of the standardized questionnaire of celiac disease quality of life (CD-QOL) in the Persian language in southwest Iran. Methods:150 adults with CD were randomly selected from the celiac clinic and Fars Celiac Registry to complete the New Persian version of the CD-QOL questionnaire. Transcultural adaptation of the questionnaire was conducted by a four-step procedure. The internal consistency of the CD-QOL subscales and convergent and discriminant validity were assessed using Cronbach's alpha coefficient and Spearman's correlation, respectively. Construct validity was evaluated by exploratory and confirmatory factor analysis. Results: All domains of the CD-QOL questionnaire had acceptable internal consistency, showing excellent reliability. The scaling success rates for convergent and discriminant validity were also within an acceptable range (87-100%). In the factor analysis model, similar to the original English version, four factors were extracted characterizing the patients' answers (limitations, dysphoria, health concerns, and inadequate treatment). Conclusion: Our Persian version of the CD-QOL questionnaire had high reliability and validity and could be used in clinical practice assessing the CD-specific HRQOL in the Iranian population.

Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease is the hepatic sign of metabolic syndrome. Here, we aimed to assess the effects of garlic and its major components on fasting plasma glucose, fasting insulin, and lipid profile levels in animal models of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease. A systematic search in PubMed, Scopus, ProQuest, and Web of Science was performed. After the screening process and data extraction, the pooled effect sizes were estimated using a random-effect model and stated as standardized mean differences and a 95% confidence interval. Out of 839 reports, 22 articles were included in the present study. The pooled results revealed that garlic and its components significantly decreased fasting plasma glucose (standardized mean difference: - 0.77, 95% confidence interval: - 1.42 to - 0.12, I2 : 58.85%), fasting insulin (standardized mean difference: - 1.88, 95% confidence interval: - 3.07 to - 0.69, I2 : 70.42%), serum triglyceride (standardized mean difference: - 1.01, 95% confidence interval: - 1.43 to - 0.59, I2 : 61.41%), cholesterol (standardized mean difference: - 1.00, 95% confidence interval: - 1.39 to - 0.60, I2 : 52.12%), and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (standardized mean difference: - 0.98, 95% CI: - 1.63 to - 0.32, I2 : 71.58%) and increased high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (standardized mean difference: 1.05, 95% confidence interval: 0.52 to 1.58, I2 : 59.39%) levels. The type of animal, nonalcoholic fatty liver disease induction model, kind and duration of intervention, study model, and risk of bias were detected as possible sources of heterogeneity across studies. We conclude that garlic and its major components have a favorable impact on glycemic control and lipid profile in diet-induced nonalcoholic fatty liver disease animal models.

Toxocariasis as a common neglected disease is the culprit of infecting all age groups. The current cross-sectional study was designed to assess the seroprevalence of toxocariasis and risk factors associated with seropositivity of Toxocara infection among the general population of adults in the Kavar district, south of Iran. A total of 1060 participants with an age range of 35 to 70 years from the Kavar region entered the study. Manual ELISA was utilized to detect anti-Toxocara-specific antibodies in their serum samples. In addition, demographic information as well as risk factors related to toxocariasis was collected from individuals who participated in the survey. The mean age of the participants was 48.9 (±7.9) years old. Out of 1060 subjects, 532 (50.2%) were men, and 528 (49.8%) were women. The overall Toxocara seroprevalence was 5.8% (61/1060). The prevalence of Toxocara seropositive cases was significantly different between males and females (p = 0.023). The seropositive rate for Toxocara infection was also significantly higher in housewives (p = 0.003) and subjects with learning disabilities (p = 0.008). Multivariable logistic regression revealed that housewives (OR = 2.04, 95% CI: 1.18-3.51, p = 0.010) and subjects with learning disability (OR = 3.32, 95% CI: 1.29-8.52, p = 0.013) were at increased risk of Toxocara infection. The findings of the current study depicted a noticeable seroprevalence of Toxocara infection in the general population in the Kavar district, southern Iran. An increased risk of toxocariasis has been associated with learning disabilities and being a housewife. All of the toxocariasis-positive cases had contact with animals, at some point in their life. In perspective, it is necessary to raise awareness of this infection among the population while surveilling Toxocara infection in high-risk groups.

BACKGROUND: Post-dural puncture headache (PDPH) is one of the most common complications in patients undergoing spinal anesthesia. The present systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to assess the therapeutic and prophylactic effects of aminophylline and theophylline on PDPH. METHODS: Relevant studies were identified by searching the following electronic databases, without language restriction, until June 2020: Scopus, EMBASE, MEDLINE, Google Scholar, Web of Science, Cochrane Library-CENTRAL, and CINAHL Complete. Random effects models were used to calculate the standardized mean difference (SMD) and risk ratios (RRs) with 95% confidence intervals (95% CI) to assess the therapeutic and prophylactic effects of aminophylline and theophylline on PDPH, respectively. The Cochrane tool was used for the quality assessment of the included studies. The certainty of the evidence was rated using the Grading of Recommendations Assessment, Development, and Evaluation method. RESULTS: Of the 1,349 initial records, 15 met our eligibility criteria (6 studies on therapeutic and 9 on prophylactic effects). A significant reduction in the pain score was observed following aminophylline/theophylline treatment (SMD = -1.67; 95% CI, -2.28 to -1.05; P < 0.001, I2 = 84.7%; P < 0.001). Subgroup analysis revealed that the therapeutic effect was significantly higher when these agents were compared to placebo than when conventional therapies were used. The risk of PDPH after aminophylline administration was not significantly reduced (RR = 0.74; 95% CI, 0.42 to 1.31; P = 0.290). CONCLUSIONS: Theophylline and aminophylline have therapeutic, but not prophylactic, effects on PDPH.

OBJECTIVE: Metabolic syndrome (MetS) has become a major health problem across the globe. Various investigations have been conducted to find the underlying lifestyle-related causes of MetS. Modifiable dietary factors are specifically the center of interest, including the macronutrient composition of the regimen. We aimed to study the association between a low-carbohydrate diet score (LCDS) with MetS and its components in a Kavarian population, located in the center of Iran. METHODS: The present study is a cross-sectional investigation conducted on a healthy sub-sample of PERSIAN Kavar cohort meeting our inclusion criteria (n = 2225). General, dietary, anthropometric, and laboratory data were obtained for each individual using validated questionnaires and measurements. Possible associations between LCDS and MetS and its components were verified using relevant statistical analyses, including analysis of variance and covariance (ANOVA and ANCOVA) and logistic regression. P-values <0.05 were considered as significant. RESULTS: Compared with the lowest LCDS tertiles, those who were assigned to the upper tertiles had lower chance of MetS, after adjusting for potential confounders (OR: 0.66; 95% CI: 0.51-0.85). Moreover, those who assigned to the top LCDS tertile had 23% (OR: 0.77; 95% CI: 0.60-0.98) and 24% (OR: 0.76; 95% CI: 0.60-0.98) lower odds of abdominal adiposity and abnormal glucose homeostasis, respectively. CONCLUSION: We observed a protective effect of low-carbohydrate diet against metabolic syndrome and its components, including abdominal obesity and abnormal glucose homeostasis. However, these initial findings need to be confirmed, especially in the format of clinical trials to ensure causality.

BACKGROUND: There is limited and conflicting evidence on the association between selenium and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). Therefore, the present population-based cross-sectional study aimed to explore the relationship between dietary selenium intake and the risk of NAFLD. METHODS: A total of 3026 subjects from the PERSIAN (Prospective Epidemiological Research Studies in IrAN) Kavar cohort study were included in the analysis. The daily selenium intake was evaluated using a semi-quantitative food frequency questionnaire, and energy-adjusted quintiles of selenium intake (µg/day) were calculated. NAFLD was defined as the fatty liver index (FLI) ≥ 60 or the hepatic steatosis index (HSI) > 36. The association between dietary selenium intake and NAFLD was evaluated using logistic regression analysis. RESULTS: The prevalence rates of NAFLD were 56.4% and 51.9%, based on the FLI and HSI markers, respectively. The odds ratios (ORs) for FLI-defined NAFLD were 1.31 (95% confidence interval (CI): 1.01-1.70) and 1.50 (95% CI: 1.13-1.99) for the fourth and fifth quintiles of selenium intake, respectively, after adjustment for sociodemographic variables, smoking status, alcohol drinking, physical activity, and dietary factors (P trend = 0.002). There was also a similar association between selenium intakes and HSI-defined NAFLD (OR = 1.34 (95% CI: 1.03-1.75) for the fourth quintile and OR = 1.50 (95% CI: 1.12-2.01) for the fifth quintile of selenium intake) (P trend = 0.006). CONCLUSION: In this large sample study, we observed a weak positive association between dietary selenium intake and NAFLD risk.

Background: Modern societies face infertility as a global challenge. There are certain environmental conditions and disorders that damage testicular tissue and may cause male infertility. Melatonin, as a potential antioxidant, may protect testicular tissue. Therefore, we conducted this systematic review and meta-analysis to evaluate the effects of melatonin in animal models against physical, heat, and ischemic damage to the testicular tissue. Methods: PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science were systematically searched to identify animal trials evaluating the protective effect of melatonin therapy on rodent testicular tissue when it is exposed to physical, thermal, ischemic, or hypobaric oxygen stress. Random-effect modeling was used to estimate the standardized mean difference and 95% confidence intervals based on the pooled data. Additionally, the Systematic Review Centre for Laboratory Animal Experimentation (SYRCLE) tool was used to assess the risk of bias. The study protocol was prospectively registered in PROSPERO (CRD42022354599). Results: A total of 41 studies were eligible for review out of 10039 records. Studies employed direct heat, cryptorchidism, varicocele, torsion-detorsion, testicular vascular occlusion, hypobaric hypoxia, ischemia-reperfusion, stress by excessive or restraint activity, spinal cord injury, and trauma to induce stress in the subjects. The histopathological characteristics of testicular tissue were generally improved in rodents by melatonin therapy. Based on the pooled data, sperm count, morphology, forward motility, viability, Johnsen's biopsy score, testicular tissue glutathione peroxidase, and superoxide dismutase levels were higher in the melatonin treatment rodent arms. In contrast, the malondialdehyde level in testicular tissue was lower in the treatment rodent arms. The included studies suffered from a high risk of bias in most of the SYRCLE domains. Conclusion: This study concludes that melatonin therapy was associated with improved testicular histopathological characteristics, reproductive hormonal panel, and tissue markers of oxidative stress in male rodents with physical, ischemic, and thermal testicular injuries. In this regard, melatonin deserves scientific investigations as a potential protective drug against rodent male infertility. The human microbiome comprises the genomes of the microbiota that live on and within humans, such as protozoa, archaea, eukaryotes, viruses, and most bacteria. Gastrointestinal disorders such as inflammatory bowel disease, colon cancer, celiac disease, and irritable bowel syndrome can all be triggered by a change in gut flora. The alteration of the gut microbiota (also known as "gut dysbiosis") is affected by host genetics, nutrition, antibiotics, and inflammation, and it is associated with the development of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). Also, intestinal epithelial dysfunction, altered autophagy, and immune hyperactivation are frequently detected in individuals with severe IBD, which may be attributed to impaired miRNA expression functions. While the exact mechanisms of how Gut Microbiota may cause IBD and intestinal epithelial dysfunction are still debated, recent data point toward the possibility that hormones, gender and miRNAs expression are modifiable contributors to IBD. This review summarizes the current evidence for an association between hormones, gender and miRNAs and Gut Microbiota in IBD and discusses potential mechanisms by which gut microbiota may impact IBD. The study also outlines critical unanswered topics that need to be solved to enhance IBD prevention and treatment in people with gut dysbiosis.

BACKGROUND: This study aimed to systematically review and pool data regarding the alterations in the clinical course of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) following liver transplantation (LT). METHODS: Relevant prospective and retrospective observational studies were identified by searching databases and gray literature through December 2020. Random-effects models were used to calculate the pooled frequency of IBD patients with disease course alterations ("improved," "unchanged," or "aggravated") after LT and the corresponding 95% confidence intervals (CIs). RESULTS: Twenty-five studies met our inclusion criteria, reporting the outcomes in 2 or 3 categories. In the analysis of studies with 3-category outcomes (n = 13), the pooled frequencies of patients with improved, unchanged, or aggravated IBD course after LT were 29.4% (95% CI, 16.9% to 41.9%), 51.4% (95% CI, 45.5% to 57.3%), and 25.2% (95% CI, 15.6% to 34.8%), respectively. Subgroup analyses revealed that patients with ulcerative colitis (UC), younger age at LT, or shorter duration of follow-up were more likely to have an improved disease course. Moreover, higher IBD exacerbation estimates were observed in studies with a low risk of bias. In the analysis of studies with 2-category outcomes (n = 12), the pooled frequencies of patients with improved/unchanged or aggravated IBD course were 73.6% (95% CI, 62.2% to 85.0%) and 24.1% (95% CI, 15.1% to 33.2%), respectively. The cumulative incidence of an exacerbated IBD course following LT was 0.22 (95% CI, 0.16-0.29; P < .001). CONCLUSION: We conclude that IBD activity remains unchanged (or improved/unchanged) in most IBD patients following LT. Furthermore, IBD type, age, and follow-up length can influence the IBD course after LT.

OBJECTIVE: To explore the relationship between metabolic syndrome and its components with nephrolithiasis. METHODS: In current study, 4,901 individuals from the PERSIAN (Prospective Epidemiological Research Studies in IrAN) Kavar cohort study were included. Metabolic syndrome was defined according to the ATP III criteria (2005 revision). The nephrolithiasis was assessed using a structured questionnaire, and ultrasound findings were reviewed in subjects who reported positive history of nephrolithiasis. We applied logistic regression to estimate the odds ratio (OR) and 95% confidence interval (CI). RESULTS: The prevalence of nephrolithiasis and metabolic syndrome was 28.5% and 40.91%, respectively. Almost 31% of the patients with metabolic syndrome had a history of nephrolithiasis. Multivariable logistic regression analysis revealed a positive association between metabolic syndrome and nephrolithiasis (OR= 1.30, 95% CI: 1.14-1.49, P<.001) after adjustment age, sex, ethnicity, physical activity, smoking status, and alcohol intake. Furthermore, the relation was higher for elders aged 50 years or more (P for interaction= .016) and Turk Nomad participants (P for interaction= 0.044) than the others. There was also a positive independent association between hypertension (OR=1.29, 95% CI: 1.12-1.48, P<.001) and hypertriglyceridemia (OR= 1.15, 95% CI: 1.01-1.31, P=.033) with nephrolithiasis. CONCLUSION: In this large sample study, we demonstrate a weak positive association between metabolic syndrome, hypertension, and hypertriglyceridemia with nephrolithiasis.

Findings on the association of sodium with nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) are conflicting. The present systematic review and meta-analysis study aimed to assess the association between salt or sodium intake or serum sodium levels and NAFLD risk. Relevant articles were identified by searching PubMed, Web of Knowledge, Scopus, Proquest, and Embase databases through May 1, 2021, without language restriction. The pooled odds ratio (OR) and 95% confidence interval (CI) were estimated using Der-Simonian and Laird method and random-effects meta-analysis. The certainty of the evidence was rated using the GRADE method. Out of 6470 documents, 7 epidemiological/observational (1 cohort, 1 case-control, and 5 cross-sectional) studies on the relationship between dietary salt/sodium intakes and NAFLD risk met our inclusion criteria. The meta-analysis of all studies showed a significant positive association between the highest salt/sodium intake and NALFD risk (OR = 1.60, 95% CI: 1.19-2.15) with a meaningful heterogeneity among studies (I2 = 96.70%, p-value <.001). The NAFLD risk was greater in the studies with higher quality (OR = 1.81, 95% CI: 1.24-2.65) or using the equation-based methods for NAFLD ascertainment (OR = 2.02, 95% CI: 1.29-3.17) or urinary sodium collection as a sodium intake assessment (OR = 2.48, 95% CI: 1.52-4.06). The overall certainty of the evidence was very low. In conclusion, high sodium intake seems to be related to increased NAFLD risk. Further well-designed studies are needed to clarify this association and shed light on the underlying mechanisms.

Literature supports the potential effects of nanomicelle curcumin and Nigella sativa on the amelioration of osteoporosis, a health concern of postmenopausal women. This study aimed to evaluate the impacts of nanomicelle curcumin (CUR), Nigella sativa oil (NS), and their combination on bone turnover biomarkers and assess their safety. This triple-blind randomized controlled trial was performed on 120 postmenopausal women aged 50-65 with primary osteoporosis or osteopenia. The subjects were randomly allocated to receive microcrystalline cellulose (placebo), 80 mg of CUR, 1000 mg of NS, or their combination (CUR-NS) for 6 months. All patients were also treated with alendronate (70 mg) and calcium (500 mg), vitamin D (400 IU) supplements. The serum levels of alkaline phosphatase (ALP), osteocalcin (OC), and osteopontin (OP) were measured at the baseline and after the intervention. For safety assessment, the hepatic enzyme levels of aspartate transaminase and alanine transaminase as well as serum urea and creatinine were evaluated. ALP levels were significantly reduced in the NS (p = .029) and CUR-NS (p = .015) groups compared with those in the placebo. After adjustment for the covariates, this effect was still significant in the CUR-NS group (p = .004). The OC levels were decreased in the placebo, CUR, and NS groups, and the OP concentration also was attenuated in all groups through the trial. However, the intergroup differences were not significant for both biomarkers. Evaluating the key renal metabolites and hepatic enzyme levels indicated no toxicity of the administered doses. This study reveals the beneficial effects of CUR-NS on the improvement of some bone turnover biomarkers. These compounds seem to be safe at the current dosage for supplementation in postmenopausal women.

Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is a gynecological endocrine disorder and the leading cause of anovulatory female infertility. This study aimed to systematically review the effects of curcumin or turmeric on PCOS-related parameters. PubMed, Scopus, Embase, and Web of Knowledge databases and Google Scholar were searched up to August 2021 using relevant keywords. All original articles evaluating the effects of turmeric/curcumin on PCOS were eligible. Out of 107 documents, eight animal studies and five randomized placebo-controlled clinical trials (RCTs) assessing the impact of curcumin on PCOS met our inclusion criteria. The reviewed animal studies indicated the beneficial effects of curcumin on the management of hormonal and metabolic disturbances in the PCOS condition. These effects also were confirmed in some, but not all, included RCTs. Therefore, despite promising animal results, the present literature is limited to conclude the beneficial effects of curcumin on the clinical management of PSCO symptoms. The impact of bioavailability-improved formulations of curcumin on PCOS should be assessed in further well-designed RCTs with longer duration and higher doses of curcumin. Besides, mechanistic investigations on the effects of curcumin on PCOS are also recommended.

Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is a common disorder affecting childbearing-age women, and is associated with reproductive and metabolic disturbances. The present study aimed to systematically review current animal studies and randomized placebo-controlled clinical trials (RCT) regarding the effects of resveratrol, a natural polyphenolic compound, on PCOS features. PubMed, Scopus, Web of Knowledge, and Google Scholar were comprehensively searched until December 2020. All original animal articles and RCTs evaluating the effects of resveratrol on PCOS were eligible for the review. Out of 289 initial records, eight animal studies and three RCTs met our inclusion criteria. Most of the included animal studies reported beneficial effects of resveratrol on the histomorphological features, sex hormones and gonadotropins, glycemic control, inflammation, and oxidative stress. Resveratrol also ameliorated ovarian volume, high-quality oocyte rate, high-quality embryo rate, androgens and gonadotropins concentrations, angiogenic factors levels, and endoplasmic reticulum stress in PCOS patients. Upregulation of sirtuin-1 was an examined mechanism proposed for some observed effects of resveratrol. The current literature is limited to conclude the beneficial effects of resveratrol on the management of PCOS. Although, according to the promising results of the animal studies and limited RCTs, resveratrol might be an effective phytochemical in PCOS control, especially regarding hormonal and reproductive abnormalities. More mechanistic studies and RCTs are warranted to obvious whether resveratrol can be prescribed in the clinical situation.

BACKGROUND: Curcumin is a natural polyphenol and the main compound from the rhizome of Turmeric (Curcuma longa) and other Curcuma species. It has been widely used for different medical purposes, such as improvement of pain and inflammatory conditions in various diseases. PURPOSE: This systematic review was aimed to assess all studies regarding the efficacy of the pure form of curcumin (unformulated curcumin) on rheumatoid arthritis (RA). METHODS: The comprehensive search of the literature was done until September 2020 on the MEDLINE, Embase, Scopus and Web of Knowledge databases. Out of 2079 initial records, 51 articles (13 in vitro and 37 animal and one human) were met our inclusion criteria. RESULTS: Most studies have shown the curative effects of curcumin on clinical and inflammatory parameters of RA and reported different mechanisms; inhibition of mitogen-activated protein kinase family, extracellular signal-regulated protein kinase, activator protein-1 and nuclear factor kappa B are the main mechanisms associated with the anti-inflammatory function of curcumin in RA. The results of the only human study showed that curcumin significantly improved morning stiffness, walking time and joint swelling. CONCLUSION: In conclusion, curcumin seems to be useful, and it is recommended that more human studies be performed to approve the cellular and animal results and determine the effective and optimal doses of curcumin on RA patients.
